LONGSTOCK
Originally Old English 'stoc'='dependent farm'; it is not known where it was dependent upon (Stockbridge?). It straggles along a road closely following the 40m contour line. There is no other 'Stoke' name close by, but there are numerous others further afield in Hampshire, and the name looks like on devised by central adminstration (the first record of the longer name is in a Close Roll).
